Partner

Bill is a partner and serves as Chairman of Johnston Barton's Business & Tax Practice Group. He is also a member of the firm's Executive Committee. Bill has practiced law for over 30 years in the areas of taxation, business, estates, and White Collar Criminal Defense. Bill has significant experience in corporate, partnership, individual, and estate tax planning and transactions, business succession planning, and Federal and State tax litigation, including tax proceedings before the United States Tax Court, the United States District Courts, the Federal appellate courts, and all State courts.

Bill also assists clients with such business matters as mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, and joint ventures. Bill's experience extends to representing companies and individuals in connection with criminal and regulatory investigations, as well as parallel civil and criminal proceedings.

Bill received his Masters of Law in Taxation from New York University (1972), his law degree from the University of Alabama (1971), and his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University (1967) where he was a member of the tennis team.

Bill has been actively involved in the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar and the Birmingham Bar Association.  In 2001, he served as President of the Birmingham Bar Association.  He recently served as Chairman of the Tax Section of the Alabama State Bar, Chairman of the Alabama State Bar Permanent Code (Ethics) Commission, the Federal Tax Clinic, and the Birmingham Bar Foundation. Bill is also a member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the Tax Section of the American Bar Association. Bill is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA.  In 2005, he was recognized by the Birmingham Business Journal as one of its Best of the Bar.

Bill has also served as President of the Duke University Alumni Club of Central Alabama, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Metropolitan YMCA.

Lousy knees forced Bill's moving on from tennis and handball to golf, but his passion is turkey hunting.  He also enjoys fishing and crossword puzzles.

Significant Cases and Matters Handled:
  • Recently spearheaded Sarbanes-Oxley corporate internal investigation.
  • Recently represented two former HealthSouth executives (not Mr. Scrushy) who were indicted separately, one of whom was acquitted on all counts after a month long jury trial; the other's indictment was dismissed with prejudice.
  • Recently represented multiple individuals targeted by Office of Comptroller of the Currency and U.S. Justice Department: All cases closed without indictment.
